Intermediate First Aid (FAD2)

This comprehensive two-day course provides advanced first aid and CPR training suitable for workplaces, home, or general knowledge. It meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards. Participants will learn lifesaving skills, including advanced wound care, CPR, and responses to various medical emergencies, following the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

  1. Introduction to the Red Cross
    • Understanding the history, mission, and principles of the Canadian Red Cross.
    • Importance of community and workplace safety.
  2. Preparing to Respond
    • Legal considerations: obtaining consent and Good Samaritan principles.
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection prevention.
  3. The EMS System
    • Understanding the role of emergency medical services (EMS).
    • Activating EMS and providing care until help arrives.
  4. Emergency Scene Management
    • Conducting scene assessments for safety and risk.
    • Prioritizing care and managing multiple casualties.
  5. Check, Call, Care
    • Primary and secondary assessments.
    • Identifying life-threatening conditions.
  6. Airway and Breathing Emergencies
    • Recognition and treatment of choking for adults, children, and infants.
    • Rescue breathing and ventilatory support techniques.
    • Management of asthma, anaphylaxis, and other respiratory emergencies.
  7. Circulation Emergencies
    • Recognizing and responding to heart attack, stroke, and shock.
    • CPR techniques for all age groups (Level C).
    • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage: safe operation and integration with CPR.

    • Controlling external bleeding and caring for open wounds.

  9. Musculoskeletal and Head Injuries
    • Immobilization techniques for fractures, sprains, and dislocations.

    • Recognition and management of seizures, diabetic emergencies, fainting, and allergic reactions.

Certification:
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a 3-year certification in Standard First Aid & CPR (Level C). This certification meets workplace and provincial/territorial safety standards and is recognized across Canada.
